One day, the gods and goddesses went to Lord Brahma and requested him to create another veda that would be easy for common man to understand and learn. It is understood that considering this request, Lord Brahma created the fifth veda which is known as the Natyaveda. The Natyaveda is based on the other four Vedas, Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda. The padhya (words) from the Rigveda, the abhinaya (gesture) from the Yajurveda, the geet (music and chant) from Samaveda, and the rasa (sentiment and emotional element) from Atharvaveda is what formed the Natyaveda.
Lord Brahma gave Sage Bharata the Natyaveda, to promote it on earth. The Natyashastra, a great and complete work on the science and technique of Indian drama, dance, and music, was then written, attributed to the Sage Bharata.
